বিয়ের আগে বিশেষ করে থ্যালাসেমিয়ার জন্য রক্ত পরীক্ষা করা উচিত। এই ভয়ংকর রোগটির কথা ও তার পরিণতির কথা প্রায় প্রত্যেক বাঙালীই জানেন। এটি এক ধরনের জেনেটিক রোগ। আমাদের রক্তে লাল রক্তকণা বা আর. বি. সি. এর হিমোগ্লোবিনে থাকে হিম নাম লৌহঘটিত অংশ আর গ্লোবিন নামক প্রোটিন অংশ। এই গ্লোবিনের প্রতি অণুতে থাকে দুটি আলফা ও দুটি বিটা শৃঙ্গল। এদের অবস্থান জিনগত কারণে পাল্টে গেলে হিমোগ্লোবিন তার স্বাভাবিক কাজ অর্থাৎ ফুসফুস থেকে রক্তের মাধ্যমে কোষে কোষে অক্সিজেন জোগান দিতে এবং কোষ থেকে কার্বন-ডাই-অক্সাইড গ্রহণ করে ফুসফুসের মাধ্যমে তাকে বের করে দিতে পারে না। ফলে কোষ প্রয়োজনীয় পুষ্টি পায় না, ফলে দেখা দেয় নানা উপসর্গ। একেই বলে থ্যালাসেমিয়া।
এই অসুখে আক্রান্ত শিশু জন্মের পর কয়েক মাস স্বাভাবিক থাকে, তারপর রোগলক্ষণ প্রকাশ পায়। শিশুর দেহ ফ্যাকাশে হয়ে যায়। অ্যানিমিয়ায় ভোগে, বৃদ্ধি হয় না, খিদে হয় না, পেট ফুলে যায়, হাড় ভঙ্গুল হতে থাকে, কপাল, নাক বসে যায় ইত্যাদি। এই রোগের চিকিৎসা আমৃত্যু শিশুটিকে রক্ত দিয়ে হিমোগ্লোবিনের মাত্রা ঠিক রাখা।
যেহেতু মা, বাবার থেকেই শিশু জন্মসূত্রে এ রোগ পায় তাই বিয়ের আগে বা শিশু জন্মের আগে মাতা-পিতার মধ্যে এ রোগের বাহক কেউ আছে কিনা তা পরীক্ষা করে এই মৃত্যুমুখী রোগটিকে আটকানো সম্ভব।
হিমোগ্লোবিনের ইলেকট্রোফারেসিস নামক রক্তের একটি পরীক্ষা থেকে সহজেই এ রোগ নির্ণয় করা যায়। এছাড়া ডাক্তারের সহিত আলোচনা করে খুব কম খরচের মধ্যেই হেপাটাইটিস বি, হিমোফিলিয়া ও রক্তের সুগার ইত্যাদি পরীক্ষা করিয়ে নিলে তারা একে অপরের শারীরিক অবস্থা সম্পর্কে জানতে পারবে এবং দম্পতিদের যৌথ ভবিষ্যৎ আরও সুন্দর হবে।
